Who has a fuzzy horse in their barn? If you have a busy riding or showing schedule this winter, then you might consider clipping your horse’s hair. Not only will they look much more tidy, but they’ll cool down faster and sweat less. For those that plan to tackle the clipping job themselves, there’s a few things you should know about clipper blades. The proper blades will make a huge difference in how your clip turns out.

Know Your Blades

Let’s start by finding the right size! Clipper blades come in all different varieties. One of the first choices you’ll have to make is the size blade that you clip with.

Size 10: Legs and body

Size 15: Bridle path

Size 30: Ears and muzzle

Size 40: If you want a clean, tidy look for your show horse, then grab these for whiskers and ears. They’re also used for surgical prep.

T-84: Perfect for a full-body clip, this blade has a wide head and gets through thick hair.

Caring for Blades

You’ll need some blade care products too. These include blade wash, blade oil, and clipper coolant. The wash will remove the factory oil found on new blades. It will also help with dirt and grime build-up. The oil keeps them running smooth. Lastly, clipper coolant will ensure the blades stay cool and hair free.

After each clip, clean your blades with the wash and apply oil. They will be good to store now.

When to Buy New Ones

A blade will need to be resharpened once they stop cutting smooth. Generally, they can be resharpened once before new ones are needed.
